Indiana recently experienced a significant economic boost due to the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, which occurred on April 8, 2024. The Indiana Destination Department Corporation (IDDC) shared the results of a report from Rockport Analytics that outlined the economic benefits that Indiana received from the event.
Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch expressed that Indiana was a popular destination for the eclipse, with the entire state experiencing between 90% and 100% totality, allowing everyone to witness the event. The economic impact of the eclipse totaled at $148.5 million, with approximately $45 million generated in taxes by visitors. This marked a 41.1% increase compared to regular visitor spending.
During the eclipse period, Indiana welcomed an estimated 3.5 million visitors, a 45% increase from normal numbers. This influx of visitors resulted in significant revenue increases for local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and retail stores. Over 400 events were hosted in Indiana during this time, contributing to the economic boost.
The study revealed that revenue in different sectors during the eclipse period included $45 million in lodging, $63.8 million in food and beverage, $65 million in recreation and entertainment, $9.7 million in transportation, and $5.4 million in retail.
