During his visit to Doha, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. The focus of their conversation included political, trade, investment, energy, technology, culture, and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

Jaishankar expressed his delight at meeting with the leaders in a social media post where he conveyed warm wishes from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He appreciated Sheikh Mohammed’s insights on the situation in Gaza and discussed strengthening the relationship between India and Qatar. Both leaders expressed a desire for continued dialogue on mutual interests.

This visit by Jaishankar was aimed at reviewing various aspects of bilateral relations, including political, trade, investment, energy, security, cultural, and people-to-people ties. It came after Qatar released eight former Indian Navy personnel who had been sentenced to death in August 2022. The Ministry of External Affairs in India stated that the visit would also cover regional and international issues of mutual interest.

India and Qatar have a long history of friendly relations marked by regular high-level exchanges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Qatar in February 2020 and held discussions with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. This latest visit by Jaishankar was another step towards enhancing the relationship between the two countries.
