Recently, a 66-year-old woman in Hanoi underwent surgery to remove a tumor from her left kidney. However, the tumor turned out to be a piece of medical gauze that was left behind from a kidney stone operation she had 14 years ago.

Initially, the doctors at Central Military Hospital 108 were puzzled by this unusual case. Dr. Ngo Minh Hanh from the Department of Pathology explained that the presence of the forgotten gauze made it challenging to accurately diagnose the condition before surgery. However, after examining the specimen and considering the patient’s surgical history, the doctors were able to make a precise diagnosis.

Pathology results revealed that the gauze had formed a mass above the kidney, causing inflammation and fibrosis that mimicked a kidney tumor.
