The marathon community is mourning the tragic loss of Kelvin Kiptum, the current world record holder, and his coach Gervais Hakizimana, who both died in a car accident in Kenya. Kiptum, who was just 24 years old at the time of his death, was driving his vehicle with two passengers when the accident occurred.

The incident was described as a self-involved accident, and unfortunately both Kiptum and Hakizimana lost their lives at the scene. A third person involved in the crash was rushed to Racecourse Hospital in Eldoret for treatment.
