Darío Gil, head of IBM’s global research division, is excited about the challenge of creating an artificial intelligence language model for Spanish. He sees this as a revolutionary advance that will change the way we interact with technology.

To achieve this goal, the Government has tasked the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and IBM with developing a foundational model based on open source. This collaborative approach will allow for transparency and capacity to be increased discreetly. The model will target sectors like small and medium-sized companies and the State Administration, using public data and potentially state-owned documents as sources.

Development will leverage existing capabilities at the BSC and IBM Research, with a focus on diversity and adaptability to different Spanish-speaking contexts. The goal is to create the first model this year and develop use cases around the same time. IBM sees strategic value in facilitating access to the model for companies and governments, similar to their Red Hat business model.

Gil believes that technology is evolving rapidly, with new planning horizons measured in days rather than years. However, he does not see a bubble in artificial intelligence. Instead, he believes that there is no bubble but rather a powerful and solid technological base that will drive future advancements in the field.
