On May 10, 2024, IBM and Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to accelerate the industrialization of quantum technology in Japan. The collaboration aims to strengthen Japan’s quantum computer parts and equipment industry by working together to develop next-generation quantum computers and improve their supply chains.

IBM plans to involve Japanese industries in the procurement processes for future quantum computing system components and collaborate with AIST to support supplier development. Reports suggest that this joint effort may involve the development of a 10,000 qubit machine by 2029. While neither company has officially confirmed this information, the timeline aligns with IBM’s quantum roadmap update from last December, which introduced the Starling system.

The collaboration between IBM and AIST is expected to advance the practical application of quantum computing across various industries, with the ultimate goal of driving growth in Japan’s quantum sector and establishing a thriving ecosystem focused on creating business value. AIST has shared a news announcement on their website about this exciting partnership, further highlighting its importance in advancing quantum technology in Japan.
