Traffic on I-75 in Lexington was backed up for miles in both directions around 10 a.m. on Monday, as a section of the highway was closed due to police negotiating with an armed man. FOX 56 was on the scene among the stopped and slowed traffic, along with a heavy police presence.
According to the Lexington Police Department (LPD), officers were dispatched to the Bryan Station Road overpass on I-75 around 9:42 a.m. for what was described as an “armed and suicidal subject.” One business owner on Bryan Station Road mentioned that this was the first time something like this had happened near his business. The incident caused a decline in sales, impacting regular customers who rely on that road for their commute.
The LPD Crisis Negotiation Unit tried to calm the subject, who ultimately fired his gun, hitting himself. He was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It was reported that no officers had to fire their weapons in this incident. The surrounding businesses and community were impacted by the situation, hoping for a safe conclusion.
