Hungarian football star Barnabas Varga fractured his cheekbone in a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during the Euro 2024 group stage match between the two nations. The injury occurred in the second half of the game, which ended in a 1-0 win for Hungary.

Varga, who is 29 years old, underwent surgery on Wednesday and was released from the hospital in Stuttgart, Germany. He has now returned home to Hungary to begin his recovery process. In a message posted on Ferencvaros’ website, Varga expressed his gratitude for the support he has received and mentioned that he is looking forward to returning to action as soon as possible.

Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai was visibly emotional during the time when Varga was injured and later criticized the medical staff’s response time. However, Uefa denied any delays in the medical treatment provided to Varga at Stuttgart Arena. The following day, Hungary’s coach Marco Rossi along with his coaching staff and player Endre Botka visited Varga to show their support for him during his recovery process.
