Recently, a lobbying group representing artificial intelligence (AI) has launched a public relations campaign to promote the positive aspects of AI being used for artistic purposes. The campaign, led by the Chamber of Progress tech industry coalition, is called Generate and Create and aims to showcase how artists use AI to enhance their work and combat legal and policy copyright threats against generative artificial intelligence.

The Chamber of Progress is made up of some of the biggest names in technology, including Amazon, Apple, Google, Intuit, and Meta. The Generate and Create campaign is built upon five key principles that highlight the benefits of generative AI for creativity and accessibility. The campaign also asserts that generative AI is generally protected under fair use provisions in existing copyright law and that extending copyright protection to styles or ideas would hinder the creative process of works involving meaningful human input.

The launch of the campaign follows recent controversies such as OpenAI’s removal of its personal assistant voice Sky after complaints by actress Scarlett Johansson about similarities to her own voice. OpenAI is currently facing multiple lawsuits alleging copyright infringement. To promote its message, Generate and Create has introduced an AI-generated mascot named Arty Fish created with the Midjourney program as well as a song titled “Arty Fish” produced by text-to-music generator Suno. The lyrics encourage listeners to open up their minds and let their thoughts run free. Through this campaign, the Chamber of Progress aims to shift the narrative around generative AI towards its artistic potential and creative benefits.

The Generate and Create campaign highlights how AI can be used creatively in art forms such as music, visual arts, literature, theater, dance among others. It showcases how artists use AI algorithms to generate new ideas or enhance existing ones resulting in unique pieces that are both innovative and engaging.

Furthermore, it emphasizes how legal frameworks must adapt to keep pace with technological advancements in order not to stifle creativity rather than protect it. By advocating for fair use provisions that protect generative AI while allowing for creativity freedom, the Chamber of Progress hopes to create a more inclusive environment where technology meets artistry.

In conclusion, the Generate and Create campaign is a welcome initiative from the tech industry coalition aimed at promoting positive aspects of using artificial intelligence for artistic purposes while addressing legal frameworks that may stifle creativity rather than protect it. It serves as a reminder that technology can be used creatively in many ways beyond just productivity tools or data analysis software but also contribute positively towards society’s cultural development through innovation.
