The House Ethics Committee has announced that it is continuing its investigation into Rep. Matt Gaetz. The probe, which began in April 2021, initially focused on allegations of sex trafficking involving a 17-year-old girl. However, with the termination of the Department of Justice’s investigation without charges, the committee has shifted its focus to Gaetz’s alleged sexual misconduct and illicit drug use.

Despite facing accusations of trying to influence a vote for his ouster over the ethics panel probe by House Minority Leader McCarthy, Gaetz claims unfair treatment. Nevertheless, the committee has conducted interviews, issued subpoenas, and reviewed documents in connection with the investigation.

The House Ethics Committee is becoming increasingly assertive in scrutinizing members’ conduct. A recent example is the expulsion of former Rep. George Santos after the committee released a scathing report on his actions. It remains uncertain when the committee will conclude its investigation into Gaetz, but one thing is clear: Members who engage in unethical behavior will not go unpunished.
