In Poolesville, Maryland, American Legion Post 247 honored Gunnery Sgt. Richard Remp at a ceremony earlier this month. Despite his impressive military career and many decorations, Remp had one wish left – to receive his high school diploma.

Remp left high school in his senior year to serve in World War II and continued to serve in the Marines through the Vietnam War. His friends Julien Singh and James Cappuccilli knew how much it meant to him to receive this diploma, and they reached out to school officials in his hometown of Sharon, Pennsylvania for help.

Superintendent Justi Glaros expedited the request and personally delivered the diploma to Remp’s home, a five-hour drive each way. Remp was overwhelmed and grateful, receiving the diploma just two days before passing away at the age of 98.

Singh emphasized that receiving his diploma was a significant, meaningful moment for Remp, and Glaros’ effort to make it happen meant a great deal to him. This touching story highlights the importance of recognizing and honoring the sacrifices made by our veterans.
