The Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica has long been a popular spot for homelessness, and business owners are feeling the impacts on their sales. Fehimeh Betts, owner of Hair Designer’s Studio, has been serving clients for four decades at the promenade, weathering challenges like the pandemic. However, she has noticed a significant decline in her clientele, with many customers complaining more about the homeless situation than traffic or parking issues. Betts has also experienced an attack from a homeless individual, adding to her concerns.

Another business owner, Ana Menard of Tazga, a family-owned clothing store, also highlighted the increase in homelessness impacting sales. Since COVID-19, Menard has seen a noticeable decline in business due to the homeless population lingering in the area. In addition to this, the store has also fallen victim to shoplifting incidents, with the issue being so severe that they have found urine in their fitting rooms.

Despite these challenges, some improvements have been seen in the area. Business owners like Menard still hope for a significant change to bring back more customers. Betts expresses gratitude for her loyal clientele and stresses the need for action from local authorities to address homelessness and create a safer environment for everyone.

Responding to these concerns, Santa Monica City officials stated that they are actively working with local businesses to increase security measures in the area. Efforts are being made to bring new businesses and activities to Downtown and Third Street Promenade with a particular focus on public safety initiatives. The city acknowledges the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment for residents visitors and business owners alike
