Herbert Pardes, 89, a prominent figure in the healthcare industry, passed away this week after a period of illness. Throughout his distinguished career, he advocated for academic medicine, medical research, and children’s health education. His impact was felt across various areas including academic psychiatry, government service, and healthcare management.

Pardes held leadership positions at the National Institute of Mental Health and as U.S. Assistant Surgeon General. He also served as president of the American Psychiatric Association and chaired prominent organizations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Healthcare Association of New York State. In recognition of his years of leadership and influence, Pardes was inducted into the Health Care Hall of Fame last year.

AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack recognized Pardes for his compassionate leadership and patient-centered approach throughout his career. He made significant contributions to the field of healthcare and worked tirelessly to improve health in communities nationwide.
