HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) recently introduced an integrated scrubber technology for ammonia-powered ships. These vessels are known for their eco-friendliness as they do not emit any carbon, making them a popular choice in the industry. The company has been working on developing ammonia-fueled vessels to eliminate the toxicity of ammonia when used as fuel.

One of the main challenges in commercializing ammonia as fuel has been leakage issues. HD KSOE addressed this concern by introducing its proprietary integrated scrubber technology at the Global Tech Forum in Greece. The technology is designed to absorb emitted ammonia on two separate occasions, significantly reducing emissions to nearly zero. Additionally, the design ensures that exhaust outlets are situated away from crew areas, enhancing the safety of the vessel.

Apart from its integrated scrubber technology, HD KSOE also introduced an AI system for ship management and a remote drone system. These systems work together to detect even fine leakages in real-time, helping prevent accidents before they occur. HD Hyundai aims to lead the future shipbuilding market by leveraging its experience in building gas carriers and expertise in green technologies.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), a shipbuilding subsidiary of HD Hyundai, has been collaborating with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) on a new design for LPG carriers powered by ammonia. This joint development project recently received approval-in-principle (AiP) from classification society ABS, marking a significant step towards the commercialization of ammonia fuel in the industry.

Currently, HD KSOE has secured orders for a total of four ammonia-fueled ships, showcasing the growing interest in eco-friendly vessels within the maritime sector.

In summary, HD KSOE’s introduction of an integrated scrubber technology and other advanced systems is paving the way towards more sustainable shipping practices within the industry.
