On May 31, 2024, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) presented its cutting-edge technologies for ammonia-powered ships at a forum held in Athens, Greece. The company’s focus was on enhancing the safety of ammonia-fueled vessels, which are considered a next-generation eco-friendly option.
The event aimed to showcase innovative technology that significantly reduces toxic gas emissions from ammonia fuel to almost zero levels. With over 100 global shipbuilding and shipping industry representatives in attendance, HD KSOE’s forum highlighted the need for solutions to mitigate the risk of ammonia leakage, a significant drawback in the commercialization of ammonia as a marine fuel.
Among the solutions introduced by HD KSOE was its Integrated Ammonia Scrubber technology, which can absorb emitted ammonia in two stages, reducing emissions to zero levels. Additionally, the company presented its AI-based ship management system and remote drone system, capable of detecting minute ammonia leaks in real-time on ammonia-fueled ships to prevent accidents.
HD KSOE’s dedication to improving the safety and efficiency of ammonia-powered vessels reflects its commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly shipbuilding technologies. The company has secured orders for four ammonia-fueled ships, including the world’s first two ammonia-propelled LPG carriers in 2023. As one of the top three international conventions in the industry, Posidonia 2024 is expected to have over 2,000 companies from 77 countries participating.
In conclusion, HD KSOE’s forum showcased innovative technology that significantly reduces toxic gas emissions from ammonia fuel to almost zero levels. The event aimed to highlight solutions that mitigate the risk of ammonia leakage and improve the safety of next-generation eco-friendly vessels.
