Hawaii Department of Health has announced a voluntary recall of four types of salad kits by Ready Pac Foods, Inc. due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. These products are sold at Walmart and Costco in Hawaii. The recalled salad kits contain cheese from Rizo Lopez Foods, which were recently recalled due to the same bacteria. As of Friday, no one has reported adverse effects from the salad kits. Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious and sometimes fatal infection that mostly affects people who are pregnant, newborns, older adults and others with weakened immune systems. The disease can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in healthy people who consume contaminated food may experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, muscle aches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain or diarrhea. Symptoms usually show up within several days of consuming the contaminated-food but may develop up to two months later. Antibiotics are used to treat listeriosis.
