A recent survey by the Business Delegation EVA revealed that about half of Finns are against increasing the EU’s collective debt. According to the findings, 49% of respondents agreed with the statement that Finland must oppose the project if the EU intends to take on more joint debt. About a fifth of respondents believed that Finland should not oppose taking on additional debt, while a third found it difficult to say.

The opinions on joint debt varied significantly depending on party affiliations. The most negative attitude towards the joint debt project was found among voters of the basic Finns party, with 77% opposing joint debt. Majority of voters of Liike Nyt (73%), the Christian Democrats (66%), and the coalition (59%) also expressed a desire to oppose the joint debt project. Among supporters of the center (49%) and RKP (44%), there were more opponents of joint debt than supporters.

Supporters of the SDP party were fairly evenly divided between opponents and supporters of joint debt. On the other hand, among supporters of the Left Alliance and the Greens, less than a fifth hoped that Finland would oppose the joint debt project.

In addition to opinions on joint debt, Finns were also divided over whether EU funding should be increased for Europe’s strong position in world affairs. Three out of ten believed that EU funding must be increased for Europe to have a strong position in world affairs, while just as many had a different opinion. Many did not take a position on this issue.
