Grand Rapids could soon have a professional soccer stadium, thanks to plans in the works between ASM Global and the West Michigan Sports Commission. Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission, shared that there are several ideas being considered, such as a soccer complex or a dedicated stadium. These ideas stem from a grand action study that highlighted the need for a professional soccer team in the area, along with adult and youth amateur complexes.

Guswiler emphasized that bringing a professional soccer team to Grand Rapids would not only attract more people to the area but also create additional events. Funding for the stadium would come from visitor tax money, specifically from the Kent Campaign which aims to raise the lodging tax in Kent County by 3%. These funds would be used for new destination assets such as the proposed soccer stadium, in addition to the already underway amphitheater project.

Aside from hosting soccer matches, the stadium could potentially be used for other events and activities when there are no games scheduled. It is seen as a way to enhance Grand Rapids’ status as a destination and draw more visitors to the area.
