After a close primary battle, small business owner and former city councilman Darrell Day has emerged victorious in the GOP runoff for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District. He now faces off against Democrat Julie Johnson, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, in the upcoming November general election to replace outgoing Rep. Colin Allred.

Despite the district’s predominantly blue leanings, Day is determined to flip it for Republicans. The district, located north and east of downtown Dallas, was heavily urbanized after the 2020 census. However, this redistricting added more areas that tend to lean Democrat. This presents a significant challenge for Day, as he will need to appeal to voters who traditionally vote Democrat while still maintaining his own conservative values.

If Day can emerge victorious in this race, it would mark a historic underdog win for Republicans in this historically blue district. Allred held the seat since 2019 and won re-election with 65% of the vote in 2022 following the redistricting. In comparison, he won with just 52% of the vote in the previous district in 2020.

The race for Texas’ 32nd Congressional District is currently rated as either “solid Democratic” or “safe Democratic” by top election analysts. However, both parties are closely watching this historically blue district as they vie for control ahead of the upcoming November general election.
