Environmentalists have been using artificial intelligence to create images of how Austria could look like in 2070 due to climate change. Letzte Generation, a collective of activists, shared realistic photos that were edited with AI tools to show the potential impact on iconic locations in Austria. The images depicted a dried-up Danube and lakes, a melting glacier, and Alpine peaks strewn with rocks.

Google Maps recently removed these images, stating that they did not align with their policies as they were not based on real experiences or accurate depictions of the locations. Activist Marina Hagen-Canaval from Letzte Generation expressed disappointment in Google’s decision. She emphasized that the intention behind the images was to raise awareness among tourists planning their holidays about the dangers of climate change.

Letzte Generation is known for its impactful actions, such as street protests and roadblocks, to draw attention to environmental issues. Despite Google’s removal of the images, the collective remains committed to raising awareness about climate change and advocating for action.
