In Fort Wayne, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) hosted a public hearing to discuss air quality concerns related to Google Data Center. The meeting aimed to address an application for the property that would allow for the use of backup diesel generators.

Concerned citizens gathered at Ivy Tech Community College-Coliseum Campus Building to submit written comments, ask questions, and address their worries about potential air pollution from the backup generators. The main concern among attendees was how the pollutants would impact their health.

Jorge Fernandez, a concerned citizen, emphasized the importance of Google being good neighbors and considering alternatives to backup generators due to their negative health effects. Public advocate Gina Burgess expressed disappointment in the lack of response from Hatchworks LLC, Google, and elected officials involved in the project.

During the meeting, IDEM clarified that they do not have legal authority to regulate zoning, odor, or noise during construction. Their decision on the permit will be based on how Hatchworks LLC complies with federal and state air emission laws. IDEM also informed attendees that public comments will continue to be accepted until July 8th by emailing feedback with reference to permit number for consideration. Following review of all comments, IDEM will issue a final decision on whether the permit will be approved or denied.

The meeting highlighted concerns over air pollution from diesel generators used in data centers like Google’s Fort Wayne facility. While Hatchworks LLC has applied for a permit to use backup generators on-site at its data center campus in Fort Wayne, these concerns were raised by residents who are worried about potential negative impacts on their health.

Jorge Fernandez spoke out against using diesel generators in data centers because of their negative health effects such as respiratory problems and cancer risks associated with exposure to pollutants like particulate matter and nitrogen oxides.

Gina Burgess expressed frustration over lack of communication from Hatchworks LLC and other stakeholders involved in the project regarding concerns over air quality issues.

The IDEM clarified that they do not have jurisdiction over issues related to zoning, odor or noise during construction but will base its decision on compliance with federal and state air emission laws.

Residents are encouraged to continue submitting comments through July 8th via email referencing permit number for consideration. Following this review process, a final decision will be made by IDEM regarding approval or denial of permit for backup diesel generators at Google’s Fort Wayne facility.
