On Friday 17 May 2024, world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by police near Valhalla Golf Club in the UK. The 27-year-old had been attempting to enter the golf club to play in the second round of the PGA Championship when he was stopped. Traffic was backed up and building, and it is reported that Scheffler tried to avoid the scene by entering through a side median.

However, a police officer instructed him to stop, and Scheffler attempted to continue. This led to his vehicle being stopped just 10 to 20 yards from the entrance of the golf club. The officer then proceeded to pull Scheffler out of the car, place him in handcuffs, and detain him.

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the incident on air and described what happened. He mentioned that traffic was backed up and building, and Scheffler had been trying to avoid the scene when he was stopped. Darlington also noted that play at the tournament had been delayed due to a fatal accident near the course.
