Gilchrist County residents faced disruptions to their Memorial Day weekend celebrations due to multiple shootings at Ginnie Springs, leading to the park’s temporary closure. According to Gilchrist County sheriff’s deputies, there were incidents of shootings on both Friday and Saturday nights.
Merrillee and Doug Jipson, environmentalists and owners of a recreational tourism business, expressed concerns about the impact of increased holiday tourism on the springs. They highlighted not only the violence but also the environmental damage caused by visitors who do not respect the natural beauty of the area.
Doug Jipson emphasized the importance of educating visitors on proper river etiquette to prevent further destruction of vegetation along the river. Despite the challenges, the Jipsons acknowledge the economic benefits that tourism brings to the community.
The Jipsons called for collaboration among various springs tourism groups, including the Florida Springs Institute, to address the issues and find sustainable solutions for preserving the community and its natural resources. The Jipsons also announced a post-Memorial Day River cleanup event scheduled for June 15 to address some of the damage caused over the holiday weekend.
