Dr. Le Duc Dung, with nearly 20 years of experience in medical research in Germany, is now working to bring leukemia treatment technologies to Vietnam. As the head of a research group specializing in leukemia at Wuerzburg University Hospital in Germany, Dr. Dung has been exposed to new cancer treatment methods, particularly immunotherapy. He believes that modern cancer treatment aims to turn acute, malignant cancer into a chronic condition or cure it completely, thereby extending the patient’s life.
Immunotherapy methods for treating leukemia include bispecific antibodies, CAR-T cells, and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Bispecific antibodies use artificial antibodies to bind cancer cells to immune cells like T cells, helping the immune system identify and destroy cancer cells. CAR-T cells involve gene-editing therapy to enhance the recognition and destruction of cancer cells, which are then reintroduced into the patient’s body. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation replaces a patient’s bone marrow with healthy stem cells from a donor.
Dr. Dung has been working to introduce these advanced immunotherapy methods to hospitals in Vietnam since 2018. With support from influential leaders in Germany, he has organized meetings and visits between German medical experts and Vietnamese hospitals to transfer technology and knowledge related to leukemia treatment. The ultimate goal is to improve cancer treatment methods in Vietnam and provide better care for patients with leukemia.
While there are challenges in implementing these modern treatment technologies in Vietnam, Dr. Dung remains committed to the cause. He believes that bridging the gap between German and Vietnamese healthcare systems is crucial for improving patient outcomes and advancing medical research in Vietnam. With determination and dedication, Dr. Dung is working to ensure that Vietnamese hospitals have access to the latest innovations in cancer treatment and care.
