A shooting spree on the market square in Mannheim, Germany, has left the community reeling. A 25-year-old Afghan man stabbed Islam critic Michael Stürzenberger with a combat knife, injuring him and five others before being shot dead by a police officer. One police officer, who was stabbed in the head from behind by the attacker, is currently fighting for his life.

Stürzenberger, who is also a member of the citizens’ movement Pax Europa and author of anti-Islam blogs, updated his followers on the messaging service Telegram about his condition after a successful two-and-a-half-hour operation. He expressed gratitude to the medical staff, police officers, and others who were involved in treating the injured. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the police officer and others who were injured in the attack.

The attack took place during a rally organized by Pax Europa where Stürzenberger was engaging in “educational work.” The Afghan attacker targeted him with a knife and then went on to harm others at the scene.
