The claim that Ukraine did not exist as an independent entity until the Soviet Union delegated it the status of a “Soviet Republic” and drew arbitrary borders around it was at the heart of Russia’s justification for invading Ukraine two and a quarter years ago. This argument sought to erase Ukraine’s independent existence, but if applied to the entire planet, most UN member states could become legitimate targets for elimination. Most countries did not exist in their current names or borders 200 years ago, and some didn’t even exist a century ago. Redrawing “non-historical” boundaries would open up dangerous Pandora’s boxes with far-reaching consequences.
