Despite being fluent in English, a group of Generation-Z employees from Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo typically share a common language of corporate despair when gathered in one location. The rigid hierarchies, excessive hours, and culture of always being present in Asian companies have led many young workers to feel profoundly unhappy with their current situations.
According to a yearly global survey on employee well-being conducted by Gallup, only 18% of individuals under the age of 35 in East Asia report feeling engaged at work, which is lower than the already lukewarm global average of 23%. Japan and Hong Kong rank near the bottom globally in terms of employee engagement across all age demographics.
