The ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to pose a threat of famine for the war-torn region, despite recent increases in food aid. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the risk of famine has not yet been eliminated, as stated by Rik Peeperkorn, WHO’s representative to the Palestinian Territories. This is particularly concerning as reports from the WHO indicate that over 40 severely malnourished children under the age of 5 have been admitted to hospitals in Gaza with additional health complications since March.

Some children as young as 2 years old weighed only around 4 kilograms, which is well below the healthy range of 10 to 14 kilograms. Malnutrition was almost unheard of in the region before the conflict began in October. Ahmed Dahir, the top doctor for the WHO in Gaza, emphasized that the food supply in the region remains fragile and that the risk of famine has not yet passed. Palestinian health authorities have reported that approximately 25 malnourished children have died in recent weeks due to complications related to their malnutrition.

Despite these challenges, there are efforts being made to address this crisis. In November, Israel announced it would be easing its blockade on Gaza and allowing more aid into the region. However, it is important to note that independent verification of information provided by Palestinian authorities cannot be guaranteed. Nonetheless, UN officials have previously trusted their estimates as reliable and continue to work tirelessly towards finding a solution to this dire situation.

The long-term effects of childhood malnutrition are concerning and will be felt for years to come. As such, immediate action must be taken to address this crisis and ensure that vulnerable children receive the support they need during these challenging times.
