Gateshead FC, a team that has called the International Stadium home for over 50 years, is considering a potential move to meet the requirements needed to join the English Football League (EFL) in the future. The club finished sixth in the National League last season but missed out on the playoffs for promotion to League Two due to not securing a ’10-year security of tenure’ note for the stadium by the deadline.

Club chairman Neil Pinkerton has stated that their first choice is to try to stay at the International Stadium, which has been their home since the 1971-72 season. However, moving grounds is being considered as a backup plan to ensure eligibility for promotion in the future and prevent a repeat of what happened last season.

In an open letter to supporters, Pinkerton emphasized that moving grounds is not the preferred option but is being explored to safeguard the club’s future. Gateshead is working with Gateshead Council on proposed new entry qualifications into the EFL from the National League, following discussions at the National League’s annual general meeting.
