The world’s most powerful democracies gathered in Bari, Italy for the Group of Seven (G-7) summit with a fiery tone towards their adversaries. Leaders from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom condemned Iran, China, and Venezuela as they expressed unwavering support for Ukraine and pledged $50 billion in loans backed by Russian assets. This move was immediately denounced by Vladimir Putin’s regime as “theft.”

Pope Francis was also present at the summit hosted by Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni. He emphasized the importance of ethical behavior in the use of Artificial Intelligence. The closing document addressed various global issues such as anti-abortionism, fair trade practices with China, and Iran’s support for Russia in the Ukraine war.

In response to Iran’s support for Russia, G-7 leaders demanded that Tehran stop transferring ballistic missiles and related technology and called for an end to its nuclear escalation. They also urged Hamas to accept a ceasefire and called on Israel to refrain from a large-scale military offensive in Rafah.

Regarding access to legal abortion and post-abortion care, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to universal access to quality health services for women, including comprehensive sexual and reproductive health rights. While the word “abortion” was avoided in the document, G-7 leaders emphasized their support for women’s health and rights.
