American Legion Post 247 honored the late Gunnery Sgt. Richard Remp, a highly respected Marine who served through World War II and the Vietnam War, at a ceremony held in Poolesville, Maryland. Close friends Julien Singh and James Cappuccilli spoke highly of his service and numerous accolades received throughout his military career.

Despite his many achievements, Remp had one final wish – to receive his high school diploma. Thanks to a Pennsylvania law allowing veterans of specific wars to receive honorary diplomas, he was eligible. However, time was running out, and in a desperate attempt to fulfill his wish, Singh and Cappuccilli contacted school officials in Remp’s hometown of Sharon, Pennsylvania.

Sharon City School District Superintendent Justi Glaros took immediate action to expedite the process. She traveled nearly 550 miles to hand-deliver Remp’s diploma to his home just days before his passing at the age of 98. The moment was emotional and significant for Remp, who passed away two days after receiving his diploma. Singh expressed gratitude for Glaros’ dedication and the final act of kindness that meant so much to Gunny in his last days.

This heartwarming story of honoring a veteran’s wish exemplifies the respect and appreciation for those who have served their country.
