At the last-chance qualifying tournament in Bangkok, Roscoe Hill and Alyssa Mendoza secured their spots on the U.S. Olympic boxing team. This brings the total number of American boxers heading to Paris to eight, all of whom will be competing in the Olympics for the first time.
Hill, who will be competing in the men’s 51kg category, and Mendoza, in the women’s 57kg category, both performed well enough at the qualifying tournament to secure their spots in the Olympics. They join their teammates Jahmal Harvey (57kg), Omari Jones (71kg), Joshua Edwards (92+kg), Jennifer Lozano (50kg), Jajaira Gonzalez (60kg), and Morelle McCane (66kg) on the U.S. Olympic boxing team.
The U.S. has qualified a boxer into eight out of the 13 events at the Paris Games, with three members of the team having won senior world championships medals, including Harvey (gold), Hill (silver), and Jones (silver). Despite this success, other top contenders like Robby Gonzales and Naomi Graham did not qualify at the last-chance tournament in Bangkok.
