In a recent episode of the RE-CAP Show, Tobin Heath, a star player for the US Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT), opened up about her journey back to the pitch after undergoing her second knee surgery. Heath, who has won two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup title, had to cut her stint with OL Reign short during the 2022 NWSL season due to a knee injury.

During her conversation on the show, Heath revealed that she received a cartilage transplant in her knee as part of her recovery process. She explained that despite initially being unaware of the severity of her second surgery, she was told that she required a more extensive repair than expected. Heath shared that she was shocked when she found out about the nature of her surgery but said, “I think it was public when I got my first knee surgery, which was actually just kind of a clean-out of the knee…I play to be at the highest level, I play to be winning World Cups, Olympics, club championships. And then obviously with that first surgery not helping, I got a second pretty big surgery with my knee that then put me in the category of like ‘Will I ever play professionally again?’”

Although Heath has not ruled out returning to play, her primary focus is currently on rehabilitation while contemplating what’s next for her career. Speaking candidly about her uncertainties, Heath said, “I kind of just pray to God and say like ‘Whatever your will is for my career
