Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is equipped with new technology that enables quicker results from DNA tests on individuals arrested for serious crimes. The technology has proven to be especially valuable for felonies, as it allows law enforcement agencies to move swiftly in connecting suspects to existing cases.

Once a person is brought into the Flagler County Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, fingerprints are taken. If an individual has a felony charge and the option to take DNA, a mouth swab is collected. Traditionally, this sample would be sent off and results would take months to return. However, Flagler County was chosen as one of 11 county jails to receive a Rapid DNA Pilot Program Grant, which allows for results to come back in just 90 minutes.

The DNA sample is processed in a machine that searches a database for matches. If the person’s DNA is linked to a case of concern, the investigating agency is notified, and the Deputy in Flagler County can reach out. This rapid process not only helps solve cases quickly but also reduces the backlog at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly emphasizes the importance of quick DNA matches in reducing the likelihood of a potentially dangerous inmate being released before facing charges elsewhere. This technology is described as a gamechanger in law enforcement as it can help solve both current and cold cases from decades ago.

In addition to Flagler County, Clay County has also been awarded a grant to acquire this technology. They recently implemented the rapid DNA testing system this month, further advancing their investigative capabilities.
