Truong Thanh Phuc and his group of friends in Quang Nam were concerned about the plastic waste on the beach that was polluting the environment. They decided to take action and use the plastic waste, along with rice husks and dolomite rock powder, to create pellets as fuel. This innovative solution aimed to not only reduce environmental pollution but also provide a sustainable fuel source.

On June 1st, 2024, Truong Thanh Phuc showcased his product “Renewable tablets – synergy from Kien Giang sea soil” at Techfest Quang Nam 2024. The pellets, shaped like pressed wood chips, drew curiosity from many attendees. Phuc explained that the idea for the pellets came from the environmental challenges in Kien Giang where many schools had to burn their garbage on-site leading to health concerns due to dust and odors. The province’s coastlines and rivers were also suffering from pollution caused by improper waste disposal practices.

After researching and testing different combinations of materials, Phuc and his team settled on a formula consisting of plastic waste, rice husks, and dolomite rock powder. This combination proved to be effective in improving combustion efficiency and reducing toxic emissions during burning. The pellets created using this formula showed promising results in reducing harmful emissions compared to burning plastic and rice husk alone.

The project won awards at national science and technology competitions for high school students for its innovative approach to waste management and renewable energy. Phuc hopes that the success of the project will inspire others to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to environmental conservation efforts.

In conclusion, Truong Thanh Phuc’s innovative solution of using plastic waste as fuel is a promising step towards sustainability. His project has shown positive results in reducing harmful emissions compared to burning plastic alone while also addressing environmental pollution issues faced by many communities around the world.
