The New York Giants have undergone significant changes at the running back position this offseason, most notably with the departure of Saquon Barkley. While Xavier McKinney and Darren Waller are important players, the loss of Barkley will be felt more strongly by the Giants than any other player on the team. The Giants have also not re-signed Matt Breida, though a potential reunion between Breida and the team is not out of the question.
As a result of these changes, Pro Football Focus has ranked the Giants’ running back unit among the league’s worst. Devin Singletary is expected to be the main back in New York, following Barkley’s exit. Singletary will reunite with former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, after posting the fifth-best PFF wins above average figure last season. Eric Gray is set to take on RB2 duties, while rookie Tyrone Tracy could provide a boost to the group, especially in the passing game.
The Giants are optimistic about their running back group and believe that Singletary can emerge as a playmaker similar to Barkley. However, they are aware that their ranking in PFF’s power rankings is low and that they need to adjust their offensive strategy moving forward. With a more balanced approach expected in 2024, they hope that Singletary can provide a reliable and durable option at the position. The team anticipates better performance from the unit, supported by an improved offensive line.
