The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Copa Health, a Valley organization, has been providing free resources to the public. They offer information and resources to anyone within the mental health community, including those living with mental illness, their families, friends, and professionals.

Recently, a former Chandler Unified School District student named Riana Alexander was highlighted for her efforts to change the way the district handles student mental health. Alexander experienced her own mental health crisis during high school and noticed gaps in the district’s response to students struggling with mental health.

She founded Arizona Students for Mental Health to open up conversations about mental health and reduce stigma among her peers. Through advocacy efforts, they were able to work with school district officials to introduce more mental health resources in schools. This led to the opening of the Hope Institute at Perry High School, which focuses on treating individuals who may have suicidal thoughts or ideation.

Alexander emphasized the importance of taking action to address mental health issues within the community and was proud to see the impact of their advocacy efforts in the school district. To access more mental health resources, visit Copa Health’s website.

In addition to Copa Health’s offerings, Alexander’s organization has been working tirelessly to raise awareness about mental health and reduce stigma among young people in Chandler Unified School District. Their efforts have resulted in more mental health resources being made available in schools and a greater emphasis on addressing these issues head-on.
