Nick Sorenson is the new defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, and he has a new assistant in Brandon Staley. Staley, who was fired as the Chargers head coach late last season, was not able to land any of the defensive coordinator jobs he interviewed for. However, he found an opportunity on Kyle Shanahan’s staff with the 49ers.

Staley spoke to reporters for the first time about his new role as assistant head coach/defense on Wednesday. He said that he was excited about working with Sorenson and General Manager John Lynch, as they share a lot of common ground in how to lead a football team. Staley believes that this new opportunity will allow him to improve and affect a team that can compete for a championship.

Taking a step back and starting with a new team was necessary for Staley to get another chance at a lead coaching job. Working with the 49ers, who have developed a different reputation than the Chargers, is a good way for him to do this while also gaining experience as an assistant coach. Overall, Staley is looking forward to this new challenge and hopes it will be energizing for his career as a coach.
