In Kansas City, Missouri, a nonprofit organization is hosting an event called “Acce$$ to Money” to help business owners learn how to find investors and other ways to fund their startups. The event will feature speakers, panel discussions, workshops, and participation from roughly 30 different organizations. Six bank presidents will lead a discussion on loan applications, and Congresswoman Sharice Davids (D-Kansas) will give the keynote address. Tickets for the event at the Kauffman Foundation are available online for $39.
Geoff Meiteen, a Score volunteer organizing the event, describes it as a valuable resource for new entrepreneurs. In a previous event, Edie Howard won a pitch competition and received both a cash prize of $750 and valuable expertise to launch her business, KC Special Recruits. Howard shares that after the event, she had investors and resources approach her and offer their support. This year, she aims to attend the Acce$$ to Money event to further grow her business, which focuses on job training and placement for people with disabilities.
Aside from hosting events like these, Score provides business mentors to assist entrepreneurs. In 2023, the organization helped open 530 new businesses in the Kansas City area. Teresa Spiess, who expanded her business Cedar Street Toffee with the help of a Score mentor, emphasizes the importance of having someone to turn to for guidance.
