The world of technology is constantly evolving and artificial intelligence (AI) is no exception. As a journalist, it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest developments in AI and its impact on public education.
One of the most recent headlines about AI in education has been concerning Texas AFT members’ concerns about students using generative AI tools like ChatGPT to avoid assignments. However, AI can also be an exciting way to engage students in learning or eliminate tedious tasks.
In response to these concerns, the Texas Education Agency has started using computers to grade students’ written answers on this year’s STAAR. This emerging technology has the potential to revolutionize education, but it also raises questions about security risks and how AI is integrated into our everyday lives.
To address these issues, the Texas House of Representatives has established an Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies subcommittee for the interim period between legislative sessions. The subcommittee aims to determine the ways AI is used in public education and identify potential security risks associated with this rapidly changing technology.
As a journalist, I believe that it’s important for educators to be prepared for the integration of AI into public education.
