Irving Branch Elementary School students on Edwards AFB recently completed a STEM project that involved the construction, painting, and launch of 12 rockets. The hands-on project aimed to reinforce classroom learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

During the project, students first learned about the different parts of a rocket and how they work together. They meticulously followed instructions to assemble functional rockets, with mistakes providing valuable learning opportunities. Teacher Nick Cantrell noted that students demonstrated persistence and determination as they worked through the building process.

After construction, students painted and named their rockets, adding an artistic element to the STEM project. This artistic touch instilled a sense of pride and ownership in the students while fostering creativity, self-expression, and communication skills.

Finally, the students gathered to watch their rockets launch from a safe distance. As the rockets soared into the sky and returned to the ground, students experienced a sense of accomplishment and excitement. Each rocket performed differently, prompting students to think critically and analyze the reasons why. This project not only provided a fun and engaging experience for the students but also instilled a growth mindset that they can carry with them throughout their lives.

The hands-on nature of this project made it particularly unique as it allowed students to apply what they had learned in real-world situations. They were able to work collaboratively as a team to achieve their goal of building functional rockets that could be launched successfully.

Overall, this STEM project was an excellent opportunity for Irving Branch Elementary School students on Edwards AFB to learn important skills in science, technology
