Chris Gotterup began his day with a leisurely walk on the beach and ended it by walking away with his first PGA Tour victory. Since taking the lead on Friday, the Myrtle Beach Classic at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club was Gotterup’s tournament to lose. He secured the win with a commanding six-stroke lead and a score of 22-under-par on May 12.

The 24-year-old golfer claimed $720,000 of the $4 million purse, earned 300 FedExCup points, and secured PGA Tour status through 2026. His victory also automatically qualified him for this week’s PGA Championship, one of golf’s major events. This win has significantly boosted Gotterup’s FedExCup points, as he more than tripled his points from the beginning of the tournament.

Reflecting on his victory, Gotterup expressed relief at having secured his PGA Tour status for the next two years. He mentioned the stress that comes with trying to maintain his card as a rookie and how this win alleviates that pressure. Despite starting his final round with bogeys on the first two holes, Gotterup regrouped and made critical birdie and eagle putts to secure his victory.

Gotterup credited a walk on the beach for helping clear his mind before his final round. He also revealed that despite some ups and downs during the round, he remained calm and focused, eventually securing his first PGA Tour victory in style.
