Each athlete’s unique definition of health plays a crucial role in their performance. To support Picture of Health, six Bupa athlete ambassadors share their stories and perspectives on what “health” means to them. Curtis McGrath, an Australian Para canoeist and former soldier, defines his Picture of Health as independence. Despite losing both legs in a mine blast in Afghanistan, Curtis remains happy, fit, and able to do the things he wants to do. He made a statement of hope on the stretcher, declaring he would see his team in the Paralympic Games. In less than two years, Curtis broke a world record and won the 200-meter VL2 world title in Moscow. He has won 14 gold medals and one silver, including golds at both Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Reflecting on his journey, Curtis finds being in Paris exciting, showcasing how far he has come since the incident in Afghanistan.
