French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his gratitude to Oman for their role in releasing French citizen Louis Arnault from Evin prison, where he had been held since September 2022. Macron also urged Iran to release three other French citizens: Cecile Kohler, Jacques Paris, and Olivier.
Arnault, a financial consultant, was arrested while traveling in Iran and later sentenced to five years in prison in 2023 for crimes against national security. Despite his imprisonment, Arnault’s relatives maintain that he was not involved in any political activities.
The arrest of Arnault came amidst mass protests in Iran, triggered by the death of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in custody. The Iranian authorities claimed that the demonstrations were influenced by foreign forces.
