The crackdown on the enslavement of the Yazidi minority by ISIS is intensifying with the acceleration of anti-terrorism justice. Two French nationals, Lolita C. and Sonia M., have been indicted in Paris for genocide and complicity in genocide, as well as crimes against humanity and complicity in crimes against humanity, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT).

Lolita C., who moved to Syria in 2014 with her two children, was radicalized by jihadist recruiter Omar Omsen. She married a jihadist and had children while living in the caliphate. During her time in Syria, Lolita C. housed an 8-year-old enslaved Yazidi girl in her home. The new indictments against her add to previous charges of criminal terrorist association and evasion of legal responsibilities since her return to France in August 2021.

The enslavement of Yazidi women by ISIS is recognized as a genocide, and those involved in the exploitation must face prosecution. Lolita C. denied the allegations against her and cited duress during her interrogation. However, these new charges highlight the pursuit of justice in holding individuals involved in such atrocities accountable.

Sonia M., who also spent time in Syria with Daesh, was also indicted for similar charges related to genocide and crimes against humanity.

The legal proceedings against these two French nationals and other French individuals linked to Yazidi enslavement are part of a wider international effort to combat terrorism and bring justice to victims of ISIS’s atrocities.
