On Friday, three men were arrested in Frankfurt on suspicion of spying on a person of Ukrainian origin for a foreign agency. The German Public Prosecution made the announcement and explained that the three suspects, a Russian, a Ukrainian, and an Armenian, were in Germany on behalf of a foreign secret service to collect information about a person of Ukrainian origin. However, the prosecution refused to specify the country with which the defendants were cooperating.

According to the Federal Public Prosecution Office based in Karlsruhe, the three suspects went to a café in Frankfurt where their target was supposed to be located. The Ukrainian Robert A., the Armenian Vardjis A., and the Russian Arman S. were arrested on Wednesday and appeared before a judge who ordered their detention on Thursday.

The arrest of these three men is just one example of several espionage cases involving Russia that have been exposed in Germany since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022. In Berlin, a former German secret agent is currently on trial on charges of transmitting classified information to the Russian security services in the fall of 2022. Since then, more than a million Ukrainians have taken refuge in Germany due to ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
