Sam Howell was the starting quarterback for the Commanders a year ago, playing in all 17 games. However, after leading the league in attempts, interceptions, and sacks, he is no longer with the team and is no longer a starter. Washington traded him to Seattle in exchange for a swap of picks. Currently, he serves as the backup to Geno Smith, with the Seahawks showing their confidence in him by not drafting a quarterback last month. Smith and Howell are the only quarterbacks on the roster at the moment.

During an interview with Tim Booth of the Associated Press on Thursday, Howell expressed his determination to compete no matter what the situation is or who the starter is. “In this league, to be able to play, you’ve got to compete and that’s what I’m willing to do,” he said. He also expressed his admiration for Smith, stating that he has learned a lot from him and has great respect for his career.

Reflecting on his mistakes from last season, Howell admitted that he needs to play smarter football. With 21 interceptions, 2 lost fumbles, and 65 sacks, he acknowledges that there were times when he was overly aggressive in trying to make something happen on the field, especially when the team was behind. He emphasized the need to reduce turnovers in future opportunities as a starter.

Currently, Howell has the opportunity to learn from the sidelines, observe and improve his skills in preparation for his next opportunity as a starter.
