On Wednesday, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was sentenced to 45 years in prison for international drug trafficking. The accused, who served as head of state from 2014 to 2022, was found guilty in March of criminal conspiracy for drug trafficking and possession of weapons. He was also fined eight million dollars.

Hernandez had proclaimed his innocence and claimed to be a victim of cartel revenge, but US prosecutors allege that he participated in and protected a network that shipped approximately 400 tons of cocaine to the US between 2004 and 2022. He allegedly received millions of dollars in bribes from cartels, including the Sinaloa cartel led by Joaquin “Chapo” Guzman. Hernandez was accused of protecting drug traffickers from investigations, arrests, and extradition.

The fall from grace was dramatic for Hernandez, who was arrested shortly after handing over power to the new president. Known as “JOH” in Honduras, he had presented himself as a champion in the fight against drug trafficking. However, with his conviction, he joins other former Latin American leaders tried and convicted in the US for similar offenses.
