The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, presented his defense to the Foreign Ministers of the Twenty-seven on Monday. In his speech, he expressed his belief that the best security option for Israel is the creation of the State of Palestine. He stated that he will present a plan for the future of Gaza and explained that he drew this conclusion after multiple contacts in the region.
To advance towards this political conclusion, Borrell plans to commission the EU External Action Service to create a document with options for the future of Gaza. He hopes that this document will be on the ministers’ table in December and serve as a basis for relaunching the two-state solution. Borrell emphasized the importance of diplomacy in achieving humanitarian pauses and avoiding an uncontrollable escalation of the crisis.
During a videoconference with the Twenty-Seven, Borrell discussed his recent visit to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. He highlighted the need for diplomatic efforts to address the war in Gaza from a humanitarian perspective and to reflect on the day after the Israeli offensive. Borrell urged ministers to work towards implementing humanitarian pauses approved by United Nations Security Council and warned about escalating crisis into other parts of region.
Borrell also pointed out case of Yemeni rebels hijacking ship which was responded to war in Gaza emphasizing that diplomacy and contacts remain best way to avoid uncontrollable escalation .He called for rapid implementation of UN resolution and emphasized diplomatic efforts are necessary to address crisis.
