Florida is officially known as the shark attack capital of the world, according to a study by the Florida Museum of Natural History. This comes after an analysis of data from the International Shark Attack File, which shows that most unprovoked shark attacks occur in Florida. In fact, Volusia County has had a staggering 351 attacks since 1882, making it the leader in this category. Brevard County follows closely with 158 attacks and Palm Beach County comes in third with 83 unprovoked attacks.
The museum’s data also revealed some interesting information about the types of activities that put beachgoers at risk for shark attacks. It turns out that 42% of unprovoked attacks last year happened to victims who were either surfing or participating in a board sport. This highlights the importance of being aware of your surroundings while engaging in these activities and taking necessary precautions to stay safe.
When it comes to planning a trip to Florida’s beaches, it’s crucial for visitors to understand when these incidents are most likely to happen. The most common months for attacks are July, August, and October. By staying informed and taking appropriate measures, individuals can minimize their risk and enjoy a safe summer vacation on Florida’s beautiful beaches.
